May Is When Presque Isle Comes to Life!
Coastal Maine shoulders into spring slowly. Shops stay closed. Restaurants hold their hours for Memorial Day. The towns that run on summer tourism are not ready for visitors yet.
Presque Isle does not have that problem.
May is one of the most active months on the Aroostook calendar. The first weekend alone covers the First Friday Art Walk and Constructive Cocktails downtown, the Anah Shrine Circus running three performances, and the Mother’s Day Tea and Basket Raffle at the hotel. After that, the calendar builds: a Star Wars community event, entrepreneurship pitches, a one-day summit for rising professionals, the Fiddlers and Fiddleheads Festival in nearby Patten, the Farmers Market opening day, and the Francis Malcolm Science Center Annual Open House.
That is not a slow spring month. That is Aroostook in full motion.
Here is everything happening in Presque Isle this May and how to plan your visit around it.

First Friday Art Walk + Constructive Cocktails: May 1

First Friday Art Walk (May 1, 5–8 PM)
First Friday Art Walk runs the first Friday of every month. May’s edition is one of the better ones of the year because spring changes the mood downtown. People come back out after winter. Local galleries refresh their exhibits. Musicians pick up spots throughout the route.
Multiple venues participate: Wintergreen Arts Center, the Reed Gallery at UMPI, and The Northeastland Hotel are all on the walk. You set your own pace. Artists are showing and talking about their work, not just hanging it. Writers do readings. Interactive demonstrations let you watch artists work or try something yourself. It is part gallery opening, part community social, part downtown block party without the chaos.
What makes it worth your time: this is how Presque Isle actually lives. The people you meet at First Friday are not tourism staff. They are the painters, craftspeople, musicians, and community members who make this place function. You get a genuine look at Aroostook’s creative side, not a manufactured tourist version of it.
After the Art Walk, you are steps from Rodney’s for dinner and drinks. Walk in, settle down, recap the evening.
Constructive Cocktails (May 1, 4–6 PM, Northeastland Hotel)
Constructive Cocktails is a monthly networking event at The Northeastland Hotel hosted by the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce. May’s conversation focuses on the airport and aerospace in Presque Isle and what regional development in that sector means for The County.
If you are traveling for business or want to understand how Aroostook’s business community operates, this is where you go. It is low-key, practical, and the conversations are real. These are people who run businesses and organizations in The County, and they talk like it.
Constructive Cocktails starts at 4 PM. The Art Walk opens at 5 PM. You can do both in the same evening, which is exactly what May 1 is built to offer.
Flower Moon Social and Potluck (May 1, 5:30–8:30 PM, Northern Maine Community Trails)
The Flower Moon Social and Potluck runs the same evening at Northern Maine Community Trails, formerly the Nordic Heritage Center. A community potluck timed to the spring full moon: people bring food, share a meal, and spend the evening together outdoors. If you are spending May 1 in Presque Isle, it is worth knowing about as an alternative or addition to the downtown programming.
Anah Shrine Circus and Thrill Show: April 30 to May 2
The Anah Shrine Circus runs three performances over the opening weekend: April 30 at 7 PM, May 1 at 3 PM, and May 2 at 10 AM. Tickets run $10 to $15.
A full traveling circus with acrobatics, thrill acts, clowns, and live spectacle that works for every age in the room. Performances run approximately two hours. If you are arriving for May 1 weekend with kids, the 3 PM show leaves the evening open for the Art Walk. If Saturday morning is free, the May 2 show finishes in time to head directly to the Spring Craft Fair at the mall.
The Shrine Circus has been part of Presque Isle’s spring calendar for years. It is a straightforward family event that delivers what it promises.
Mother’s Day Tea and Basket Raffle: May 1–2
The Second Annual Mother’s Day Tea and Basket Raffle runs at The Northeastland Hotel from 4 to 8 PM on May 1 and 9 AM to 6 PM on May 2. Free to attend.
The menu is a High Tea catered by Rodney’s. Luxelens Photography sets up a photo booth on site. A Bouquet Bar lets guests build their own floral arrangement to take home. The raffle basket selection is handprepared by the organizers.
All proceeds benefit Homeless Services of Aroostook. This is not a ticket-based gala. It is a community fundraiser with real purpose behind it, hosted at the hotel and built around a genuinely good afternoon.
For a Mother’s Day trip to Presque Isle, May 1 gives you the Tea starting at 4 PM, the Art Walk beginning at 5 PM, and Rodney’s for dinner after. That is a full and purposeful Friday.

The Spring Craft Fair at the Aroostook Centre Mall, hosted by Crafters Creations, runs May 2 from 10 AM to 6 PM and May 3 from 11 AM to 4 PM. Free to attend.
Local artisans bring handmade items, one-of-a-kind gifts, and work you will not find in chain retail. Aroostook craft fairs feature serious makers, not mass-produced goods labeled as handmade. If you enjoy markets and want to bring something home from The County that was actually made here, plan 90 minutes to walk it properly. Good pieces move early.
Leadership Seminar and Top Gun Pitch: May 6–7
Leadership Seminar with Gregg Frame (May 6, Northeastland Hotel, 11 AM–2 PM)
The Leadership Seminar with Gregg Frame runs May 6 at The Northeastland Hotel from 11 AM to 2 PM, hosted by the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce. Practical leadership content delivered to a northern Maine audience. For business owners, managers, and professionals working in Aroostook County or the broader rural Maine economy, this seminar is worth building a May 6 visit around. The hotel is the venue, which keeps logistics simple.
Top Gun Pitch and Networking (May 7, 5–7 PM, Ignite Presque Isle)
The Top Gun Pitch and Networking event runs May 7 at Ignite Presque Isle at 436 Main Street from 5 to 7 PM. Free to attend. Seven local businesses pitch live. Light refreshments and networking begin at 5 PM, with pitches starting at 5:30 PM.
This is what rural entrepreneurship looks like when the community takes it seriously: seven businesses built in Aroostook County, pitching to a room of people invested in the region’s economic future. If you follow the startup and small business community in northern Maine, this is where you want to be on the evening of May 7.
Trivia Night at The Lounge follows at 7:30 PM the same evening, making May 7 an easy full evening without going anywhere.
Arts and Creativity: Mandala Workshop and Youth Art Group
Mandala Acrylic Paint on Wood Coasters Workshop (May 8, 6–7:30 PM)
Stars and Moon Art and Poetry hosts a Mandala Acrylic Paint on Wood Coasters Workshop at The Northeastland Hotel on May 8 from 6 to 7:30 PM. $3 to attend. Participants design mandala patterns on wood coasters using acrylic paint. Beginner-friendly. You leave with handmade coasters you can use or give as gifts. A low-commitment, genuinely enjoyable 90-minute evening.
Youth Art Group at Turner Memorial Library (May 19 and 26, 2:30–4 PM)
The Public Youth Art Group runs May 19 and 26 at the Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library from 2:30 to 4 PM. Free or low-cost. Structured creative programming for young people on Tuesday afternoons.
This is not a tourist attraction. It is a community program that happens to be running during your visit. For families spending a few days in Presque Isle, knowing the library has structured creative programming available means you have a built-in option that is practical and genuinely useful. Turner Memorial Library is worth knowing about regardless. A good library tells you a lot about a town. Presque Isle’s is actively programming through spring.
Future Forward Summit: May 14
The Future Forward Summit, presented by Momentum Aroostook, runs May 14 at The Northeastland Hotel from 8:30 AM to 1 PM. Tickets run $20 to $30.
A one-day summit for emerging professionals: tools, connections, and content for people looking to grow, lead, and build careers in Aroostook County and beyond. The morning format keeps it focused. The networking is regionally specific. For organizations developing talent pipelines in northern Maine, this is the event doing it in May.
Fiddlers and Fiddleheads Festival: May 16
The Fiddlers and Fiddleheads Festival runs May 16 from 11 AM to 4 PM at the Patten Lumbermen’s Museum, 61 Shin Pond Road in Patten. Free to attend.
Patten is about an hour south of Presque Isle, but the drive through the Aroostook River valley in mid-May is part of the experience. The festival brings live fiddle music, food, cultural programming, and the broader Aroostook heritage together at one of the region’s more significant historical sites.
Fiddleheads are the young fern shoots that define spring foraging in northern Maine. They appear for a narrow window each May, and the festival makes that the centerpiece of the afternoon. If you are spending the weekend of May 16 in Presque Isle, a day trip to Patten for the festival is a natural Saturday plan. Drive south in the morning, spend the afternoon at the museum, return in the evening.
Francis Malcolm Science Center Annual Open House: May 23
The Annual Open House at the Francis Malcolm Science Center in Easton runs May 23 from 10 AM to 2 PM. Tickets are $5.
The Science Center opens its doors for a full day of hands-on science exploration, telescope access, and family programming built around astronomy and the natural sciences. Northern Maine has some of the lowest light pollution in the eastern United States, which makes the region genuinely exceptional for stargazing. The Open House connects that natural advantage to real education: equipment access, expert staff, and programming for every age.
For families with kids, this is a clear choice. For adults interested in the night sky, it is a rare chance to get hands-on access to the center’s telescopes and knowledge.
Practical note: The Presque Isle Farmers Market opens the same morning. Market first, Science Center after is a natural plan for May 23.
Presque Isle Farmers Market: Opening Day May 23
The Presque Isle Farmers Market opens its 2026 season on May 23 at the Pavilion, 19 Riverside Drive, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
Opening day of the Farmers Market carries its own energy. Local growers, producers, and makers bring the first goods of the season. Early in the season the selection is smaller than the summer peak, but what is available is what is genuinely ready right now. The vendors are people who work Aroostook land year-round. That is not something you manufacture.
For visitors in town on May 23, the morning market pairs naturally with the Science Center Open House in the afternoon. Both wind up by midday and cover enough different ground that one day handles both comfortably.
Trivia Night at the Lounge: Every Other Thursday
Trivia Night at The Lounge runs May 7, 14, 21, and 28, starting at 7:30 PM. Rodney’s has food and drinks available. Teams enter for $5.
If you have followed the hotel’s Facebook page recently, you know what a full Trivia Night looks like: 14 teams, over 100 people, a comeback story that earned 30 comments on the recap post alone. The Lounge is the right size for it. If you are planning any Thursday stay at the hotel during May, Trivia Night is the right reason to stay in rather than go anywhere else.

Why May in Presque Isle Is Worth Your Time
The Crowd Problem Does Not Exist Here
Coastal Maine in May is either still closed or bracing for the summer crowds that will arrive in six weeks. Presque Isle in May is busy in the right way. Community events every weekend, local businesses open, genuine activity across arts, outdoor sports, business, and culture.
You are not fighting summer tourist prices. You are not waiting for things to open. You are arriving to a town that runs on its own schedule, independent of tourist season.
Every Weekend Has Something Different
This is not one event you plan a trip around. May in Presque Isle gives you a different reason to be here every single week.
- Week 1: Art, community, circus, and a genuine Mother’s Day option
- Week 2: Entrepreneurship, professional development, and hands-on creativity
- Week 3: A rising-professionals summit and a regional heritage festival
- Week 4: Opening day at the Farmers Market and a full Science Center Open House
Four weekends. Four distinct experiences. One basecamp.
The Community Is Real
The Top Gun Pitch and a room of people who care about Aroostook County’s economic future. The Farmers Market populated by growers who work this land year-round. The Fiddlers Festival at a working museum in a small town. The Mother’s Day Tea with proceeds staying in the community.
These are not manufactured tourist experiences. They are community events that happen to be open to visitors. That distinction matters, and you feel it when you are there.
