SnowBowl 2026: Aroostook’s Ultimate Winter Festival Returns

The County's Snowbowl 2026

Last Updated:

Forget Generic Winter Carnivals

You’ve been to winter festivals before. Beautiful Ice sculptures people admire for a time. Chili cook-offs and classic food trucks. Vendors selling crafts, trinkets, treasures and more.

The SnowBowl is that, and so much more!

From February 27 through March 1, 2026, Aroostook County transforms into the epicenter of northeast winter motorsports and celebration. Professional SnoCross racers launch 40 feet through the air at Spud Speedway in Caribou. X-Games caliber freestyle riders throw backflips on snowmobiles. International ice racing pros compete on speedway bikes and outlaw quads under the lights at The Forum in Presque Isle. Vintage snowmobiles parade through Caribou.

This is the 4th Annual SnowBowl, sponsored by E.J. Prescott, and it’s become the signature winter event for Central Aroostook; drawing over 8,000 people annually, selling out hotels weeks in advance, and injecting millions into the local economy while delivering three days of legitimate winter thrills you can’t find anywhere else in New England.

Here’s your complete guide to SnowBowl 2026, including what to see, where to stay, and why The Northeastland Hotel in Presque Isle puts you minutes from every major venue.

The SnowBowl Story: From Idea to Regional Tradition

SnowBowl | Visit Aroostook
Snowbowl | Visit Aroostook

The SnowBowl began in March 2023 when Spud Speedway co-owners Troy Haney and Jim Gamage wanted to showcase Aroostook County as a premier winter destination. They knew the region had the infrastructure, over 2,300 miles of interconnected snowmobile trails, reliable snow, and a culture built around winter recreation, but needed an anchor event that would draw visitors from across New England and beyond.

That first SnowBowl delivered immediately. More than 8,000 people showed up for four days of racing, stunt shows, groomer rodeos, and community celebrations. Local hotels reported their busiest winter week in years. Restaurants ran out of food. Gas stations couldn’t keep up with demand. The economic impact was measured in millions, and the cultural impact was undeniable, Aroostook County had created something special.

Year two expanded the event from four days to five and brought in additional venues across Central Aroostook, including BigRock Mountain and partnerships with regional events like the Can-Am Crown International Sled Dog Races in Fort Kent. Attendance held strong despite variable weather, proving that the SnowBowl had staying power.

By year three in 2025, the SnowBowl had evolved into a true regional tradition, with professional racing circuits making Aroostook County an annual stop and families planning winter vacations around the event.

Now in its fourth year, SnowBowl 2026 represents the fully realized vision: a multi-venue, multi-day winter carnival that combines professional motorsports with community celebration, vintage nostalgia, family activities, and genuine northern Maine hospitality. This isn’t a corporate festival dropped into a random location, this is Aroostook County celebrating what it does best.

Why Presque Isle is Your SnowBowl Basecamp

Geography matters during SnowBowl weekend, and Presque Isle puts you in the strategic center of all the action.

Venue proximity from Presque Isle:

  • The Forum (Ice Racing venue): In downtown Presque Isle, 10/15 minute walk or 5-minute drive from The Northeastland Hotel
  • Spud Speedway, Caribou (Main racing venue): 15-minute drive north on Route 1

The Northeastland Hotel sits at 436 Main Street in downtown Presque Isle, which means:

You’re walking distance from The Forum for Saturday night ice racing, literally a 10-15 minute walk or 3-minute drive. You’re 15 minutes from the main SnowBowl hub at Spud Speedway in Caribou via a straight shot up Route 1. You’re back at the hotel between events without marathon drives or complicated logistics. You’re surrounded by downtown dining, coffee shops, and local businesses instead of isolated at a highway exit.

Why this matters: SnowBowl days are long. Friday and Saturday start with racing at 10 AM in Caribou, and Saturday culminates with ice racing at 7 PM in Presque Isle. You don’t want to be driving an two and a half hours each way from Bangor or stuck in Caribou when evening events happen back in Presque Isle. Staying in Presque Isle gives you flexibility, reduces travel time, and puts you in the geographic sweet spot between all venues.

Beyond Racing: Winter Activities Around SnowBowl Weekend

SnowBowl is the main attraction, but Aroostook County offers plenty of winter recreation if you want to extend your stay or mix in other activities.

Nordic Outdoor Center (10 minutes from downtown Presque Isle) maintains 15 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails through quiet forests. Rentals are available on-site, and trails accommodate both classic and skate skiing. If you need a recovery day from SnowBowl crowds, Nordic skiing offers peaceful contrast.

BigRock Mountain in Mars Hill delivers downhill skiing with 980 feet of vertical, 32 trails, and nearly zero lift lines at half the cost of major resorts. Adult day passes are $60 (compared to $109-$149 at popular resorts), and the mountain offers a package deal with the Northeastland Hotel! You could not ask for a better deal!

Snowmobile Trail Network: Aroostook County maintains over 2,300 miles of groomed trails connecting small towns and wilderness areas throughout the region. If you brought your own sled or want to rent, SnowBowl weekend coincides with peak trail conditions. Local clubs welcome visitors, and trail maps are available at gas stations and outdoor shops throughout Presque Isle and Caribou.

Ice Skating at The Forum: When not hosting ice racing, The Forum offers public skating sessions. Check their schedule if you’re traveling with kids who want traditional winter fun between motorsports events.

Practical Tips for SnowBowl Weekend

Weather & What to Wear:

Late February in Aroostook County means temperatures in the teens to low 30s Fahrenheit. You’ll spend extended periods outdoors watching races, so layer aggressively:

  • Base layer (moisture-wicking)
  • Insulating mid-layer (fleece or down)
  • Windproof outer shell (jacket and pants)
  • Warm hat, gloves (bring extras), neck gaiter or balaclava
  • Insulated winter boots with good tread
  • Sunscreen Lotion – yes really, snowburn is painful!

Hand warmers and foot warmers are lifesavers during long racing sessions. Sunglasses help with snow glare on sunny days. Bring a small backpack for snacks, water, extra layers, and gear you’re not currently wearing.

Tickets & Costs:

SnowBowl events have varying ticket structures:

  • Spud Speedway SnoCross racing: Day passes available at the gate or online through Spud Speedway’s website. Weekend passes offer better value if you’re attending multiple days.
  • The Forum Ice Racing: Separate tickets, limited capacity. Buy in advance through The Forum or Spud Speedway ticketing. Find them here!
  • Sunday Funday and Vintage Sled Show: Often free or minimal fee for spectators; participation fees apply for riders.

Check the official SnowBowl website and Spud Speedway Facebook page for updated times and pricing. The tickets can be found here: Spud Speedway Tickets

Hotel Booking:

SnowBowl sells out Presque Isle and Caribou hotels weeks in advance. Book your room at The Northeastland Hotel as soon as you commit to attending. Call us directly at (207) 768-5321 for group rates, extended stays, or special requests.

Food Strategy:

Vendors at Spud Speedway offer typical event food; burgers, hot dogs, fries, hot chocolate, coffee. Quality varies, but convenience is the priority when you’re watching races all day.

For sit-down meals, downtown Presque Isle and Caribou have locally owned restaurants, cafes, and pubs. Rodney’s at The Northeastland Hotel serves full lunch and dinner menus throughout the weekend, and our bar stays open late for post-event gatherings.

Bring your own snacks and water if you have dietary restrictions or want to save money. Gas stations and grocery stores in both towns are well-stocked.

Traffic & Parking:

Spud Speedway offers large parking areas, but they fill up during peak hours (Saturday mid-morning through afternoon). Arrive early for best spots, or expect to walk from overflow lots. Parking is free.

Downtown Presque Isle offers street parking and public lots near The Forum and Main Street businesses. The Northeastland Hotel provides free parking for guests.

Family-Friendly Considerations:

SnowBowl events work well for families with kids who enjoy motorsports and winter activities. SnoCross racing is loud; bring hearing protection for young children. The Forum ice racing is indoors and slightly quieter.

Indoor vendor areas and heated spaces at Spud Speedway offer warm breaks when kids need to defrost. The Northeastland Hotel’s central location in Presque Isle means you can easily return to the room for naps, snacks, or downtime between events.

The Real Aroostook Advantage

If SnowBowl is your introduction to Aroostook County, you’re discovering a region that deserves repeat visits year-round.

Aroostook sits farther north than most of Maine, which translates to colder temperatures, deeper snow, and that legendary “squeaky fluff” powder that doesn’t clump or get heavy. Winter outdoor recreation here rivals anything in New England but without the crowds and resort pricing that plague southern destinations.

The culture is authentic northern Maine, unpretentious, welcoming, and genuinely invested in sharing what makes this region special. When locals tell you where to find the best trails or hidden gems, they’re not gatekeeping. They want you to experience Aroostook the way they do.

SnowBowl exemplifies this perfectly. It’s a community-driven event that grew from a vision shared by two local business owners who wanted to showcase their home. Four years later, it’s become a regional tradition that brings thousands of visitors, generates millions in economic impact, and strengthens the identity of Central Aroostook as a serious winter destination.

Come for the SnowBowl. Stay for the skiing, snowmobiling, local food, clear northern skies, and the realization that northern Maine has been here all along, waiting for you to discover it.
